The Rise of Pop Culture - part one

The following is an excerpt from my soon-to-be-published book, titled… “The Tek-Gnostics Heresies – Tales of Wonder from the Collective Conscious” Having covered some exceedingly interesting ground since this weblog’s inception, the “Heresies” represent a retrospective synthesis of the esoteric investigations pursued on this blog, as well as a synopsis of philosophic principles explored at the Tek-Gnostics website. The book format allows these ideas to be more fully contemplated and expanded upon.

The Heresies compilation is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather an introduction to an evolving system of perception that merges technology (tek) with intuitively derived knowledge (gnosis). This blending of technology and intuition represents the foundational cornerstone of what I have come to call: Tek-Gnostics. It aspires to be a field guide to the practical application of Artifact and Epiphany, in one’s daily life.

In the excerpt below, we pick up the tale in chapter three, entitled “The Rise of Pop Culture” wherein the Heresies examine formative historical events, circa 1967. Viewed through the lens of popular or “pop” media, the sixties are best remembered for the explosion of cultural expression, psychedelic experimentation and consciousness expansion known as the “Summer of Love.” In turn, the events that played out in the summer of 1967 were a culminating flash point that was ignited by pressures which began to build at the close of World War II. The Summer of Love signaled the end of the old paradigm and suggested the beginning of the so-called “new age.”

“People today are still living off the table scraps of the sixties. They are still being passed around… the music and the ideas.”

- Bob Dylan

During those early post-war years, something new was germinating… unnoticed, almost lost in the outward expressions of the era. National optimism was at a peak during the 1950’s. Even with the technological muscle of post-WWII America, there still lingered a collective innocence reminiscent of the last century. However, something strange was brewing in the psyche of the Western World… a fundamental shift… as yet undefined.

In the early 60’s, communications theorist  Marshall McLuhan prophesized that the visual, individualistic print culture would soon be brought to an end via an "electronic interdependence" …where electronic media would replace the now-antiquated print culture. In this new age, humankind would move from individualism and fragmentation to a collective identity, with a "tribal base." McLuhan labeled this new social organization: The global village.

Key to McLuhan's theory was the idea that technology has no moral disposition. It is an artifact that deeply shapes an individual and his/her society's self-conception and self-awareness. As if in anticipation of the World Wide Web, McLuhan coined and popularized the usage of the term "surfing" to refer to rapid, irregular and multidirectional movement through a voluminous body of documents or knowledge.

In 1964, McLuhan published: “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man.” In that work, McLuhan coined the phrase: “The medium is the message” …illustrating that a specific medium (print, radio, television, social, etc.) becomes an inseparable and influential part of the message being communicated. This symbiosis of media and message influences how the message is perceived. McLuhan’s work implied that modern media itself was fast becoming more important than the content it carried. McLuhan brilliantly foresaw that a specific medium affects society, not only by the content delivered over the medium, but also, and most importantly, by the attributes of the medium itself.

In 1967, the very year of the Summer of Love, McLuhan published his “opus magnum,” what would become his definitive work: “The Medium is the Massage.” Given that McLuhan was known to enjoy a good play on words (originally titled The Medium is the Message, McLuhan preferred the new title, which is rumored to have been a printing error), he adopted the term "massage" to denote the effect each medium has on the human sensorium (the sum of an individual’s perceptions), taking inventory of the "effects" of numerous media in terms of how they "massage" the sensorium. To wit:

“Instead of tending towards a vast Alexandrian library, the world has become a computer, an electronic brain, exactly as (in) an infantile piece of science fiction. And as our senses have gone outside us… Big Brother goes inside. So, unless aware of this dynamic, we shall at once move into a phase of panic terrors, exactly befitting a small world of tribal drums, total interdependence, and superimposed co-existence.

Terror is the normal state of any oral society, for in it everything affects everything… all the time. In our long striving to recover (for the Western world), a unity of sensibility and of thought and feeling we have no more been prepared to accept the tribal consequences of such unity than we were ready for the fragmentation of the human psyche by print culture.”

- Marshall McLuhan

As the sixties drew on, pop media began to evolve, mirroring McLuhan’s ideas. Artists, such as Peter Max and Andy Warhol began producing psychedelic-neon-infused works of art that foreshadowed the luminous artwork of the coming information age. The US East Coast music scene smoldered with avant-garde experimentalism as exemplified by Warhol’s favored: Velvet Underground, whose work would inspire the punk scene of the late 70’s and early 80’s. Meanwhile, musical groups on the West Coast, such as the Byrds, the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead (aka: The Warlocks), were busy creating an accompanying psychedelic soundtrack for the culminating Summer of Love.

Perhaps one of the most profound musical vehicles of the emerging psychedelic media of the Summer of Love was epitomized and imported to American shores by that  neo-diasporic phenomenon known as the “British Invasion”. The important cultural artifact in question was released in June of 1967, in the form of a record album titled “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” …by those master magicians… the Beatles. One of, if not “the” first concept album… Sgt. Pepper incorporated visually rich montage album art and auditory memes of the era, to produce the definitive multi-media musical offering of the decade.

Track three on the album, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” …was broadly considered a thinly-veiled reference to the chemical catalyst… the apex… the crown chakra of experience that fueled the summer of love… LSD-25. Championed by that rascally trickster, John Lennon, the Beatles foreshadowed and encapsulated the psychedelic revolution that was to come…

“Picture yourself in a boat on a river…
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly…
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.”

-from “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by Lennon & McCartney

In order to fully appreciate the truly earth changing and epoch ending importance of the events of the Summer of Love, we must examine in greater detail, those events in history that lead up to this pivotal decade. As we shall see, the psychedelic sixties did not suddenly emerge out of thin air, after WWII. In fact, the emergence of the sixties’ psychedelic culture is but one contemporary example of what anthropologists call an: entheogenic sub-culture, the lineage of which has a long, archaic history.

The Fisher King

The realm of cyberspace dark and vast... Not all of its secrets are given up easily. Having explored its far reaches, the traveler emerges from the darkness of the virtual wood, into a campfire-lit clearing. Illuminated by the pixilated firelight, the storyteller sits…
“Shall I tell you one of the ancient tales?” the rascally old sage cackles. Slowly he begins...

Picture the archetypal king as a boy, having to spend the night alone in the forest to prove his courage so he can become king.

Now while he is spending the night alone he's visited by a sacred vision. Out of the fire appears the holy grail, symbol of God's divine grace. And a voice said to the boy,

"You shall be keeper of the grail so that it may heal the hearts of men."

But the boy was blinded by greater visions of a life filled with power and glory and beauty.

And in this state of radical amazement he felt for a brief moment not like a boy, but invincible, like God,
... so he reached into the fire to take the grail,
... and the grail vanished,
... leaving him with his hand in the fire to be terribly wounded.

Now as this boy grew older, his wound grew deeper.

Until one day, life for him lost its reason. ... He had no faith in any man, not even himself.
... He couldn't love or feel loved.
... He was sick with experience.
He began to die.

One day a fool wandered into the castle and found the king alone. And being a fool, he was simple minded, he didn't see a king. He only saw a man alone and in pain. And he asked the king,

"What ails you friend?"

The king replied, "I'm thirsty. I need some water to cool my throat".

So the fool took a cup from beside his bed, filled it with water and handed it to the king.

As the king began to drink, he realized his wound was healed. He looked in his hands and there was the holy grail, that which he sought all of his life. And he turned to the fool and said with amazement,

"How can you find that which my brightest and bravest could not?"

And the fool replied,

"I don't know. I only knew that you were thirsty."

Pop Warfare

“Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence,
understanding, will war disappear.”

To begin with the obvious, there is nothing “pop” or trivial about the horrors of war. The State of War is visited upon humanity all too often, pathologically infecting and impacting large swaths of Earth’s human population. The word Pathology is from the Ancient Greek root of pathos (πάθος), meaning "suffering" …and logia (-λογία), "an account of" …is a foundational identifier in the study of causation of disease… an account of suffering. The condition of War is like a disease, or more closely akin to the fable of the little rodents known as Lemmings, who periodically commit mass suicide… so the story goes.

What is horrific about our modern “War on Terror” as pursued by the likes of US “Homeland Security” and others, is that it falls outside the confines of conventional war. The War on Terror does not have any clearly defined beginning or end. It does not have a designated battlefield, or even a clearly defined enemy. It is a war without boundaries, targeting multiple… real or imaginary… perceived enemies. Consequently, the parameters that encompass the conception of modern warfare have virally expanded.

This state of affairs is especially complicated and confusing when addressing the conflict surrounding the entity known variously as ISIL, the Islamic State… and most nefariously as Daesh (Dawlat al-Islamiyah f'al-Iraq wa al-Sham). Daesh has further expanded the parameters of warfare to include media warfare. Beyond propaganda, Daesh promotes an international “Brand” via a robust social media presence that preys upon the disenfranchised world-wide… so the story goes.

Daesh stands out as a particularly successful example of militant ideologues that has psychically weaponized what once was a factional, if not ethnic… regional Islamic struggle, through the virtual vehicle of social media, and created a platform that can be accessed by millions, daily. Ironically, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like, use the “Follow” function as their primary networking means... thereby reinforcing the recruiting connotation.

In their slick branding, Daesh assumes the persona of David, doing battle against the Goliath that is the Western Empirical Powers. This underdog facade draws many at a time when peoples the world over have understandably lost faith and trust in the presiding dominator cultures. Their message is easily consumed and digested in the alienating, divisory world of social media, where One's actions are not immediately held accountable.

There are those who are savvy to the new paradigm of social media warfare. It is worth noting that the loosely associated international network of activist and hacktivist entities, collectively known as “Anonymous,” has recently declared war, in response to the Paris attacks.

This emerging social media culture… still in its infancy, remains malleable, especially by those who would twist it to meet their ideological needs. Our emerging culture is driven by popularity... "likes" ..."follows" etc. This popular or "Pop" culture turns on a dime... Morphs... mutates almost instantaneously. In the hands of heartless powers, social media becomes "Pop Warfare" …infecting the vulnerable with the desired ideology. The lines have blurred… the enemies R us… Welcome to the World Entertainment War… welcome to Pop Warfare.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power... the world will know peace.”

2001: a Space Odyssey & the Planet of the Apes – dichotomy of vision

Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterpiece: “2001: a space odyssey” has been described as the quintessential science fiction epic. The film was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by science fiction great, Arthur C. Clarke (with Kubrick) and was partially inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel". The film’s plot revolves around the discovery of a mysterious, apparently extra-terrestrial black monolith affecting human evolution.

Beginning in a Paleolithic African desert, a tribe of man-apes is driven from their water hole by a rival tribe. They wake to find a featureless black monolith has appeared before them. One adventurous man-ape… “Moon Watcher” approaches the monolith and upon touching it, realizes how to use a bone as a tool and/or a weapon. The newly intelligence infused tribe subsequently kills the leader of their rivals and reclaims the water hole.

Fast Forward: A Pan Am space shuttle carries Dr. Heywood R. Floyd to a space station orbiting Earth for a layover on his trip to a U.S. outpost on the moon. His mission is to investigate a recently found artifact buried four million years ago. The artifact is identical to the one encountered by the man-apes. As Floyd examines the lunar dig-site, sunlight strikes the monolith… it emits a mysterious high-pitched signal. Eighteen months later, the U.S. spacecraft Discovery One is bound for Jupiter. Onboard the Jupiter is Astronauts David Bowman, Frank Poole and the infamous sentient computer… Hal.

Psychedelic misadventures follow. The film deals with the themes of existentialism, human evolution, emerging technology, artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial intervention.

Also released in 1968 was Franklin J. Schaffner’s film: The Planet of the Apes. The script was originally written by Rod Serling of “Twilight Zone” fame. The film tells the story of an astronaut crew who crash-land on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the apex or top predator and humans are mute, primitive prey creatures.

Much has been speculated about these two films. Many conspiracy theories… especially pertaining to Kubrick’s “odyssey” continue to circulate on-line. False Flag… Faked Moon Landing… Illuminati influence… you name it. Additionally, the two films share mysterious similarities. For example, both films depicted extra-terrestrial landscapes shot on location around the Lake Powell, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Is this a covert acknowledgment of a larger conspiracy?

Chris Knowles, over at one of our very favorite weblogs “The Secret Sun” recently posted a particularly interesting narrative on possible esoteric interpretations of 2001, entitled: “Stanley Kubrick and the Reality Stargate: Secret Space.”

The coincidence… or more likely the synchronicity… of these two prophetic depictions of the future, both being released in 1968… point to a deeper, generational choice of mythologies. The late nineteen sixties were arguably the apex of American Culture. The babyboom, following the Allied victory of WWII, floated the American Experience to its high-water mark. The Kennedy & King assassinations, the Vietnam War and other, more nefarious indicators, such as MKULTRA had not yet lowered America’s expectations. The long slide down the back-side of the American Dream had not picked up any momentum yet… At that time, there appeared to be nowhere to go, but up.

The space race with Russia, then the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was seen as a pathway to a shining future, rather than a proxy war… by most Americans. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had been established in 1958 by Ike Eisenhower and was broadly considered a exploratory agency, rather than an off-world arm of the Pentagon.

Add to this most critical juncture, these two motion pictures. Science Fiction has always been a genre of “cautionary tale.” The release of both 2001: a space odyssey and the planet of the apes in 1968… presented America and the world with a crossroads of vision. Here the road forked…

Overtly, Kubrick offered a vision of technological singularity and a Star-Child evolution. Something wondrous (My God, it’s full of stars!), this way comes. That the term “technological singularity” would not be commonly used until the 1990’s, is a testament to Kubrick’s vision (collusion?). Schaffner’s film offered a vision of de-evolution of American Exceptionalism. His darker vision of the ramifications of nuclear proliferation was more akin to the brilliant short story by Kurt Vonnegut, also published in 1968… “Welcome to the Monkey House.”

These two great films presented us with dueling ideologies… diverging mythologies. The question becomes, which fork in the road did we choose? Are we still making the choice? Institutions of belief, such as Religion and Science provide a shaping structure in which to manifest the mythology. Not popularly considered a religion, science blindly follows its own cannon and dogma. Strangely enough, Pop-culture has provided humanity with its newest sci fi religion: The Cult of StarWars… but I digress.

The two films released in 1968, represented a dichotomy in vision of the future. It was as if the two films artistically embodied, for all of humanity, a threshold or choice at the mythological crossroads. In classic mythology, the crossroads represent a location "between the worlds" … a site where supernatural spirits can be contacted and paranormal events can take place. Symbolically, it can mean a locality where two realms touch and therefore represent “liminality.”

In anthropology, liminality is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. So too did we stand at the crossroads between the industrial age and the information age, poised to strike a bargain. The so-called space age represented the choice itself. The space race… became the ritual.

Meanwhile, back at the crossroads, one path would lead to a future of technological marvel and limitless possibilities… the other toward an increasingly dystopian world, driven by the survival of the fittest. Humanity would have to decide which future to pursue. The cynics among us would suggest that the outcome was obvious… but I am not so sure.

Depending on the day, the events of our modern world demonstrate consequences of both visions. At times, the possibility of Kubrick’s Star-Child seems to be just beyond the horizon. On other days, it feels like we are all living on the planet of the apes. At the end of the (proverbial) day, we continue to manifest our future. The scenarios are still being played out. The deepest, most profound element at this or any crossroads is the essential quality of being human… that we have the choice. Free will is our trump-card. Planet of the Apes, or Space Odyssey? Or is there a third way?

Stay tuned beloved readers… for it increasingly feels likely that we are about to find out.

Clarke's Three Laws.

Sri Lankabhimanya Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, CBE, FRAS (12-16-1917 to 3- 19-08) was a British-Sri Lankan science fiction writer, science writer and futurist, inventor and undersea explorer. He is perhaps most famous for being co-writer of the screenplay for the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, widely considered to be one of the most influential films of all time.

Here at the Tek-Gnostics Network, Clarke is most highly regarded as the creator of “Clarke’s Three Laws” of prediction.  They are:

1.) When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

2.) The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

3.) Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Clarke's First Law was proposed by Clarke in the essay "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination", in Profiles of the Future (1962).

The second law is offered as a simple observation in the same essay. Its status as Clarke's Second Law was conferred by others. In a 1973 revision of Profiles of the Future, Clarke acknowledged the Second Law and proposed the Third. "As three laws were good enough for Newton, I have modestly decided to stop there".

The Third Law is the best known and most widely cited, and appears in Clarke's 1973 revision of "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination". It echoes a statement in a 1942 story by Leigh Brackett: "Witchcraft to the ignorant, ... simple science to the learned". An earlier example of this sentiment may be found in Wild Talents (1932) by the author Charles Fort, where he makes the statement: "...a performance that may some day be considered understandable, but that, in these primitive times, so transcends what is said to be the known that it is what I mean by magic." Even earlier, Rider Haggard's novel She (1886) expresses the sentiment multiple times, such as in chapter 17:

"Fear not, my Holly, I shall use no magic. Have I not told thee that there is no such thing as magic, though there is such a thing as understanding and applying the forces which are in Nature?"

Cult of Personality – Pt 2

Often, within conspiratorial circles, what is being focused upon by the “Pop” media is considered to be a distraction or subterfuge to “what the hell is really going on.” Those conspiracy theorists, who observe such phenomena through a synchronistic lens, tend to look for deeper, symbolic relevance in their scrutiny. Not satisfied with overt, political ramifications… as portrayed within pop media… the synchronistic theorist looks for covert, occult connections that may lead to a broader, deeper understanding of current events.

It has been said that specific (un-named) powers that be… relish in hiding these deeper connotations, in plain sight. They achieve this through subterfuge, distraction and media manipulations that divert attention from more consequential issues… the master magician’s sleight of hand. With that said, observing the dog and pony show that has been the lead-up  to the 2016 GOP presidential primary race, reveals some… shall we say… interesting observations. So… returning to the apparent GOP frontrunner… the subject of part one of the Cult of Personality series… Donald Trump. A more arcane examination of “The Donald” reveals some fascinating synchronicities…

Trump Card

A “trump” is a playing card which is elevated above its normal rank in “trick-taking” games. The word "trump" derives from "trionfi" or "triumph", the name of a card game dating back to the year 1529… which ultimately evolved into modern card games such as Whist. A trick-taking game is a card game in which the play of a "hand" centers on a series of rounds called tricks, which are scored to determine a winner or "taker" of that trick. The object or result of such games is closely tied to the number of tricks taken. Typically, with modern playing cards, an entire suit… such as “Clubs” or “Spades” is nominated as a trump suit. These cards then outrank all cards of plain (non-trump) suits.

Within the context of our synchronistic examinations, it is exceedingly interesting to note that the word “Trionfo” was also the name of the original card game from which Tarot Cards were derived. In the Tarot Deck, the Major Arcana are a suit of twenty-two cards. They serve as a permanent trump suit within the tarot deck, and are distinguished from the four standard suits, collectively known as the Minor Arcana. The terms "Major" and "Minor Arcana" are used in the occult and divinatory applications of the deck. Again, within Trionofo, the tarot or major arcane cards had the role of what are now called trumps. Later card games would designate one of the four ordinary suits (clubs, diamonds, spades or hearts) thereby eliminating the use of Major Arcana cards in modern decks.

So, within the modern playing card deck, the Major Arcana are gone… but not forgotten.

As the presidential elections fall on the sixteenth year of the 21st century, let us take a synchronistic peek at the number 16. In numerology, the symbolism of number 16 indicates the achievement of the material power. According to numerologist, R. Allendy, it represents "the role of the Karma 6 in the cosmic unit 10. This role consists in creating a current of evolution (1 + 6 = 7) …but towards two opposite directions, so that, by itself, 16 (even number), is unable to choose." As a product of 2 x 8, it is the positive evolution leading to the karmic liberation, or the negative evolution leading to an increasingly tight sequence in the cycles of nature. A spiraling down, if you will.

For the 14th century German mystic Jakob Boehme, this number represented "the Abyss", or the hell, as opposed to nirvana. According to the French author and lecturer on the paranormal, Guy Tarade, it is the number of Lucifer. Tellingly, the 16th trump or Major Arcana card of the Tarot deck is The Tower, which means the breaking down of old forms. Does the “Trump Tower” ring any bells? The Tower card follows immediately after The Devil card, in all Tarots that contain it… and is associated with sudden, disruptive, and potentially destructive change.

The name Trump also raises more occult implications. The divinatory or oracular nature of the Tarot Deck, with its 22 major arcane or “trump” cards, suggests a supernatural predominance. Pop Media, in turn would associate the Tarot with witchcraft and/or the “dark arts.” In light of the above, and returning to the concept of Cult of Personality, the rise in prominence of Donald Trump, suggests a troubling association with sudden, disruptive, and potentially destructive change.

From a synchronistic standpoint, this imagery speaks in the archetypically rich language of Jung. It is clear that The Donald has struck a deep resonating chord within America’s collective unconscious. Trump’s persona and its popular appeal could be taken symbolically. In more mundane contexts, the term “trump card” can refer to any sort of action, authority, or policy which automatically prevails over all others. Trump may represent a “man of action” or worldly power. Worldly power often is wielded without regard for whom or what stands in its way.

Like the Devil card, America’s infatuation with the persona or image of Trump, could ultimately be interpreted as a fascination with the shadow... or that which is unresolved within us. Again, in numerology, the symbolism of number 16 indicates the achievement of the material power… but towards two opposite, unresolved directions.

In the wake of global humanitarian catastrophe, such as massive refugee crisis in Europe and the renewed and emboldened proxy wars between the US and Russia, now being fought in Syria, the Ukraine and elsewhere… the situation appears to be moving toward a Geo-political flashpoint. Meanwhile, all attention back in the good ole’ US of A, is being focused… directed… upon the ‘afore mentioned dog and pony show.

So it is that the metaphorical or symbolic connotation of the name “Trump,” takes on a slightly more sinister significance. Is the GOP… or the powers that be, behind the “Grand Old Party” playing their trump card? Are they signaling… by hiding their intentions in plain sight… an intention, if not an outcome of the 2016 elections?

Stay tunes intrepid explorers of the arcane… stay tuned.

Cult of Personality

Things are really getting strange here in the “Land of the Free” …the “Broken Promised Land” …if you will. The American political machine is cranking up for the Grand Old Party’s second debate. Going into the debate with Donald Trump as the clear front runner begs the question… What the Hell is Donald Trump even doing on the stage?

Please know that this post is not an assessment… this is not an endorsement or a repudiation of “The Donald.” per se. It is a sincere quandary as to why has such a bombastic media personality… one with no real political experience or expertise… why has such a reality star/performer captured the fascination of the American public? What is it that so resonates with both Democrats and Republicans alike, within a political framework, that would place The Donald in serious contention for the Republican presidential nomination?

It would be understandable for The Donald to be popular within a pop media, Entertainment Tonight context. He is a reality star, after all. I can see The Donald right up there with the Kardashians, for example. Perhaps that’s why Kanya West announced his 2020 presidential candidacy… to re-claim market-share. The fascination of the American Public resembles, more than anything else, an infatuation with a charismatic leader.

Again, it is clearly not Donald’s political savvy… he has demonstrated that he has none. His position on immigration for instance, is to build a wall. To paraphrase his words: “It will be such a beautiful wall… and Mexico will pay for it... they’ll be glad to, believe me.”  That is his immigration policy, to date.

The question of “Why Donald?” becomes one of a phenomenon known as “Cult of Personality.”

A cult of personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized, heroic, and at times, worshipful image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. Sociologist Max Weber developed a tripartite classification of authority; the cult of personality holds parallels with what Weber defined as "charismatic authority." A cult of personality is similar to divinization, except that it is established by mass media and propaganda usually by the state, especially in totalitarian states.

- Wikipedia

Donald has turned the use of “unquestioning flattery” on its head, by being rude, obnoxious and generally disrespectful, toward his rivals. A troubling aspect of this analogy… widely used by the American press… is the association of “cult of personality” with totalitarian states. Again, from Wikipedia…

Personality cults were first described in relation to totalitarian regimes that sought to alter or transform society according to radical ideas. Often, a single leader became associated with this revolutionary transformation, and came to be treated as a benevolent "guide" for the nation without whom the transformation to a better future could not occur. This has been generally the justification for personality cults that arose in totalitarian societies of the 20th century, such as those of Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini and Ruhollah Khomeini.

This connotation is extremely unsettling, given the political climate in the US, ever since the Edward Snowden revelations…

"The Simpsons" predict Trump Presidency

Read into the last statement what you will. The reality is that our political process has become a bazaar side-show in some dark, macabre circus… right out of the twilight zone. The problem is… this isn’t funny… this is not entertainment. Giving The Donald this kind of legitimacy is downright dangerous. The Republican Party... and the American public need to beware...

Be careful what you wish for... 'fore it will surely come true.

The Demiurge... Black Hat or White Hat?

The “Architect” from the Matrix franchise.
Over the last several decades… all things Gnostic have enjoyed an extraordinary renaissance. Triggered by a series of Archaeological discoveries in the 1940s, inspired by the works of Dr. Carl G Jung and popularized by such disparate figures as Philip K Dick, Lana & Andy Wachowski and even the incomparable underground cartoonist, R Crumb… Gnosticism has captivated an increasingly significant segment of public awareness. It appears that our modern, technologically connected… post-religious world is pre-disposed for the cosmological and philosophic sensibilities of Gnosticism.

Gnosticism (from Ancient Greek: γνωστικός gnostikos, "learned", from γνῶσις gnōsis, knowledge) is a contemporary term used to describe numerous Biblical era mystery schools and/or religious orders’ cosmological understandings. Most of what we know today about Gnosticism was uncovered in the waning years of World War II, in a collection of papyrus codices, known as the Nag Hammadi library. This collection of Gnostic texts was discovered near the Upper Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi, by a local farmer named Muhammed al-Samman, in 1945.

Contemporary Gnostic Bishop, Stephan A. Hoeller (Tau Stephanus) succinctly defined Gnosticism as a teaching based on Gnosis, the knowledge of transcendence arrived at by way of interior, intuitive means.

Rising on the tide of public interest, Gnostic philosophic ideas have increasingly infected contemporary pop media. In the 1999 film “The Matrix” by the Wachowskis, a black-clad computer hacker known as Neo falls asleep in front of his computer. As Neo stirs from his slumber, a mysterious message appears on the screen: "Wake up, Neo." This succinct phrase encapsulates the plot of the film… Neo struggles with the problem of being imprisoned in a "material world" …that is actually a computer simulation program created in the distant future by an omnipresent Artificial Intelligence (read: Demiurge). Within a martial arts/action genre, the film brilliantly depicts the Gnostic perspective that the fundamental problem which humanity faces is ignorance... and the solution is knowledge or awakening.

The ancient Gnostics of biblical times held certain “novel” and unorthodox religious beliefs that set them heretically apart from the early Church…

Unlike most early Christian sects, which taught that humanity, via “original sin” was essentially flawed and responsible for human suffering… the Gnostics maintained that the material world was flawed specifically because it was created by a flawed creator deity. “God be Crazy.” Thereby the Gnostics placed responsibility for all the horror and suffering of the material world, squarely on the shoulders of the creator God of the Old Testament, Jehovah. Humans were not only innocent of the corrupt nature of the world… not only free of original sin… they held within them, a divine spark of the true, transcendent, unknowable Godhead… which really ticked Jehovah off!

Gnostics referred to Jehovah as the flawed creator deity: The Demiurge. The word “demiurge” is an English word from a Latinized form of the Greek δημιουργός, dēmiourgos, literally “public worker” and which was originally a common noun meaning “craftsman” or “artisan.” The Gnostic Demiurge is by no means exclusively good… but is rather portrayed as a bungling and incompetent cosmic fool that creates the world as a spiritual prison. Gnosticism also maintains a distinction between the highest, unknowable "Godhead" and the subordinate “creator” of the material world… the Demiurge. In fact, some systems of Gnostic thought present the Demiurge as antagonistic to the will of the Supreme unknowable Godhead… this sort of Demiurge focus' solely on material reality and on the “sensuous soul.”

Within certain Gnostic systems, the Demiurge is a mythological way to understand the problem of evil, differing sharply from Christianity, which sees Creation as originally good, but corrupted by subsequently created malevolent beings (such as the alleged Devil). In the Apocryphon of John (from the Nag Hammadi library), the Demiurge is given the name "Yaldabaoth". Through arrogance born of stupidity, he proclaims himself as God:

“Now the archon who is weak has three names. The first name is Yaldabaoth, the second is Saklas, and the third is Samael. And he is impious in his arrogance which is in him. For he said, 'I am God and there is no other God beside me,' for he is ignorant of his strength, the place from which he had come.”

One such Roman era Gnostic sect, named after the biblical Noah’s third son, Seth… have been referred to as “Sethians.” The Sethian mythology portrayed the Demiurge as an ignorant bumbling creator at best. In the Sethian school, the Demiurge is a hostile demonic force who creates the material world in order to trap the spiritual elements. The Sethian cosmology emphasized the dualistic relationship between the individual human spirit and the unknowable Godhead. Their redemptive path to reunification with Godhead was by means of gnosis or knowledge, bypassing the Demiurgic manifested world. From Giovanni Filoramo 1990:

“The image of Demiurge usually portrayed in the Sethian texts is negative. Apart from anti-Jewish and anti-Christian polemic there are some internal reasons for this, specifically the function of the psychic (soul) element represented by the Demiurge. This element is not, as for Valentinians and other Christian Gnostics, the seat of free will, but a moment (that of animation) in the hylic (material) dimension and, like it, destined to perdition. This is the radical difference from the Valentinian Demiurge, the latter being a representative of the psychic element that is also called upon to participate in the work of salvation. Devoid of scarifying characteristics, Ptolemy's Demiurge is simply the Creator of the Seven Heavens, who lives above them.”

However, the Demiurge in the Valentinian school, is quite different in character from the hostile creator figure familiar from other schools of Gnosticism. In contrast, Valentinians “show a relatively positive attitude towards the craftsman of the world or god of Israel” (Layton 1987). Valentinians insisted that while the Demiurge may be a bit confused or foolish, he certainly could not be considered evil. Instead, he has a role to play in the process of redemption.

“Unlike the Sethians who taught a dualism between matter and spirit, the Valentinians taught that the structure of the universe is tripartite. In their view, the cosmos consists of three distinct components: spirit (pneuma), soul (psyche) and matter (hyle). This tripartite division is also applied to human beings. Every human being is said to consist of three components: a material body, an animating soul, and a spirit. According to the Valentinian creation myth, this tripartite structure has its origins in the fall and redemption of the divine emanation (Aeon) Sophia or "Wisdom". They told a myth of her (Sophia's) fall and redemption which has three distinct phases or stages. In each stage of the myth, one of the three primary substances was created.”

- David Brons (from

So it is that various schools of Gnostic thought viewed the Demiurge very differently. Some sects… such as the Sethians, viewed the Demiurge with contempt… as a blind, hostile and jealous god that was intrinsically evil. Sethians relied on personal experience and inquisitive inquiry into the nature of man and religion, rather than fate and mysterious ways. While other sects, such as the Valentinians, saw the Demiurge as inherently good. Like Plato, the Valentinians thought that the term Demiurge implied a demigod with a blind but benevolent urge to bring the unmanifest into manifestation… a creative intermediary between the material world and Godhead, or "that which shall remain nameless."

The question becomes… is the mythic creator, the Demiurge… intrinsically good or inherently evil? Is the “Architect” of the material world to be considered a good guy or a bad guy? Is one Gnostic interpretation correct and the other not? Is one truth and the other delusion? Is the dualistic Demiurgic mythology, as outlined above, to be compared to the Yin/Yang system of the East? …to the binary on/off system of the West? Like the modern computer hacker mythology, does the Demiurge wear a black hat… or a white hat? Since so little is known of the ancient Gnostic teachings, the incomplete texts that are available to us do not make a definitive or even clear distinction.

What is clear… is that a mythology of a confused, or worse, deranged creator God… is quite unsettling. Perhaps it is meant to be. Perhaps the dichotomy is intended. Perhaps the seeds of doubt are deliberately sown within Gnostic teachings to underscore the role of humanity’s free will to choose… for the road always forks, it seems.

It is said that there comes a time in the spiritual development of every student of the inner mysteries, where he or she is faced with a catastrophic moment of doubt. This crisis of faith has been referred to as “the dark night of the soul.” It has also been infamously typified as entering “Chapel Perilous” by uncle Bob Wilson, et al. The ancient Gnostics referred to this psychologically traumatic terrain as: The Valley of the Shadow.

Within the Guru/disciple relationship, this agonizing moment comes when the student increasingly doubts the teacher’s intentions. During their discipleship, the Guru has been a trusted pillar of light, instructing the disciple in their spiritual tradition. Suddenly, the teachings take a turn in a certain way as to cause distrust and distress in the mind of the student. Is the beloved and trusted Guru, in fact a maniacal, diabolical tyrant? Have years of devotion and faith been devastatingly misplaced?

This moment is inevitable… often orchestrated by the very Guru… for there comes a time when each of us must take responsibility for our own spiritual development. Every student must graduate from their tutelage. No one understands the need to wean dependence better than the true Guru. Carl Jung called this process “individuation” wherein innate elements of personality, the components of the immature psyche, and the experiences of the person's life become integrated over time into a well-functioning whole.

So it is that we moderns have reached a point in our collective spiritual development where we must wean ourselves from the tutelage of antiquated religious frameworks. Blind faith in religious, pie in the sky, bye and bye, institutions no longer serve us well. The revelations and accusations of priest pedophiles, over the last 50 years, is but one horrific example of the Church’s moral and spiritual failure. In this regard, the resurgence of Gnosticism is no coincidence.

It is ironic that an ancient religious structure such as Gnosticism becomes instrumental in our collective individuation process… in our weaning of religious institution. Gnosticism is arguably the progenitor of the early Christian Church. How appropriate that such a radical cosmology… one that was hounded out of the early church as heretical… returns in the modern era to reveal the modern church’s corruption.

And so in asking the big question… by what means did universe come into existence? ...we approach the Gnostic mythology. Does the Gnostic metaphor for the power that gave rise to the material universe… the Demiurge… represent malevolence or benevolence? Is our universe a soulless, uncaring mechanical clockwork? Or is there an inherent emanation of love flowing and permeating universe, from that which shall remain nameless?

At times, it certainly feels like our material world is a cold, heartless place. Don’t turn on the evening news, or this suspicion might be reinforced if not verified. Perhaps this is the Chapel Perilous moment facing humanity. Perhaps we must choose a mythology wherein Demiurge wears either a white hat or a black hat. Perhaps we must decide the mythology, good or ill, we choose to pursue, thereby overcoming our doubt. Just as we choose our understanding of the Demiurge (as above), we too (so below) must choose to wear the white hat or the black hat… for our path is fashioned in the choosing. As each of our souls are that divine spark, our decided mythology will co-create universe… in the choosing.

In the end, all becomes one and there is no differentiation. But out here on the perimeter… out here on the road less traveled… our choice is important. Our free will is that divine spark, emanating from the Gnostic Godhead. Our free will is the conscious connection between us and the supreme, unknowable Deity of the Gnostics. In so choosing, we become part of the creative process. Universe unfolds by virtue of the co-creative conspiracy between us and that which shall remain nameless.

Chimps & Macaques Enter the Stone Age.

In the rainforests of West Africa, the woodlands of Brazil and the beaches of Thailand, archaeologists have unearthed some truly remarkable stone tools. It's not the workmanship that makes them special. If anything, a casual observer might struggle to even identify them as ancient tools.

What makes these tools noteworthy is that the hands that held them weren't human. These stone tools were wielded by chimpanzees, capuchins and macaques. The sites where they have been unearthed are the basis of a brand new field of science: primate archaeology.

The tools are crude. A chimpanzee or monkey stone hammer is hardly a work of art to rival the beauty of an ancient human hand axe. But that's not the point. These primates have developed a culture that makes routine use of a stone-based technology. That means they have entered the Stone Age.

Chimpanzees of West Africa do seem to have managed to pass their stone-based technology… which they use to crack open nuts… down many generations. We know this because of a landmark study in primate archaeology that was published in 2007.

Chimpanzees are our closest living relative. The fact that they, like us, can use stone tools might imply that the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was the first to develop a stone based technology.

It's possible that chimpanzees… and macaques and capuchins… haven't yet reached the limits of their technological capabilities. But it's not clear whether they will have the opportunity to advance their Stone Age technology. We are shrinking their populations dramatically through habitat destruction and hunting. Smaller populations cannot spread and sustain complex technologies as well as larger groups.

In other words, chimps and monkeys might have the capacity to make much more sophisticated stone tools, but they may never get the chance to achieve that potential: all because of another group of primates that became master stone tool manufacturers.

Gunung Padang – Sacred Mountain.

Back in 2012… we did a series of posts concerning what is known within “Pop Culture” as: Ancient Astronaut Theory (AAT).  The most common and intellectually accessible understanding of ATT involves the notion that highly advanced extraterrestrial beings had visited Earth in its antiquity and made “first contact” with our distant ancestors. According to archaeological conventional wisdom, mankind developed cultural and technological sophistication within the last 10,000 years. According to ATT, this “explosion in intelligence was triggered by this first contact.  Here is an excerpt from part one of that series…

“According to ancient astronaut theory, the apparently miraculous achievements of antiquity… such as the construction of the great pyramids in Egypt and Central America, the Moai stone heads of Easter Island and the Nazca lines of Peru… are remnant examples of this ancient intervention. Per this theory, all prehistoric knowledge, religion, and culture either came directly from extraterrestrial visitors, or were developed as a result of the influence of a cultural incubator or “mother culture" of extra-terrestrial origin.”

Part One: ATT: Are the World’s Religions Cargo Cults?

Part Two: ATT: Deeper… Weirder.

Part Three: ATT: Fungus Amongus.

In part two of the series, we explored a more intriguing concept, of what can be referred to as Ultra-Terrestrial Theory (UTT). Unlike ATT, wherein humanity is visited and assisted by off-world ancient aliens, the explosion of cultural intelligence and development was triggered by a much more ancient, preexisting terrestrial “mother culture.” From part two…

“The idea of a pan-global, millennia old, technologically advanced (earthling) civilization that has for reasons of their own remained hidden from most, if not all of humanity, seems unlikely at first glance. But in comparison to AAT considered in part one, UTT would answer or “fit” all of the same criteria concerning humanity’s amazing feats of antiquity and mythological similarity, as well as solve the insurmountable challenges of  physical inter-stellar space travel. UFOs of earthly, ultra-terrestrial origin would not have to contend with the unfathomable distances between star systems.”

Recent archaeological excavations on the Island of Java, in Indonesia… have called into question the conventional 10,000 year theory, for the rise of humanity. The controversial findings of this most recent study, pushes humanity’s reign back an additional 15,000 years. Findings such as these shed new light on the ultra-terrestrial theory.

The object of archaeological scrutiny is the sacred mountain, Gunung Padang. As we shall see, this sacred mountain may prove to not be a mountain at all…

“The geophysical evidence is unambiguous… Gunung Padang is not a natural hill but a man-made pyramid and the origins of construction here go back long before the end of the last Ice Age. Since the work is massive even at the deepest levels, and bears witness to the kinds of sophisticated construction skills that were deployed to build the pyramids of Egypt or the largest megalithic sites of Europe, I can only conclude that we’re looking at the work of a lost civilization and a fairly advanced one.”
- Dr D. H. Natawidjaja

Gunung Padang is a megalithic site located in Karyamukti village, in the West Java Province of Indonesia, 30 miles southwest of the city of Cianjur and 55 miles from the capital Jakarta. It has been called the largest megalithic site in all of Southeastern Asia, and has produced carbon dating results which, if confirmed, suggest it is extraordinarily old.

Since its first exploration by archaeologists in 1914 the site was thought to be a natural hill with 2,500 year-old megalithic structures on top of it. But in 2010 geologist Dr Danny Hilman Natawidjaja (who earned his doctorate at Cal Tech) recognized this “hill” as a possible man-made pyramid and began to explore it using ground penetrating radar, seismic tomography, resistivity survey and other remote sensing techniques, as well as some direct excavations and deep core drilling.

The results were immediately intriguing… producing evidence of deeply buried man-made chambers and yielding carbon dates going back as far as 26,000 years. This was the last Ice Age when our ancestors are supposed (according to the orthodox archaeological model) to be have been nothing more than primitive hunter gatherers incapable of large-scale construction and engineering feats. Was it possible that geologist Natawidjaja was unearthing the proof of a lost advanced civilization of prehistoric antiquity?

Excavations have produced results that prove beyond doubt that Gunung Padang in indeed a man-made pyramid of great antiquity as Dr Natawidjaja had long ago proposed. Even the relatively young layer so far excavated (the second artificial columnar rock-layer beneath the megalithic site visible on the surface) has yielded dates of 5200 BC (nearly 3000 years older than the orthodox dating for the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt) and there are firm indications from the original remote sensing and core drilling work of much older layers below. In short, it is now evident to all that the site is vastly older than the 2500 years that archaeologists had insisted upon for decades. Even the most hostile amongst them are therefore now reframing their assessment of the site and referring to it as “a gigantic terraced tomb, which was part of the biggest megalithic culture in the archipelago.”

Your Democracy Has Been Hacked (updated)

Folklorists, cultural anthropologists and others who study such things, have found the belief that good (or bad) things come in threes… is an ancient superstition. They further suggest that the “Rule of Threes” remains a potent modern belief.

My most recent experience of the rule of threes began with a morning television newscast. In a breaking newsflash, the anchor reported that United Airlines had grounded all flights, world-wide. This event, no doubt caused considerable bother for passengers around the world. United issued a statement saying it suffered from "a network connectivity issue" and apologized to customers for any inconvenience. It said that 4,900 flights were impacted by the problem worldwide.

This had gotten me thinking about computer network vulnerabilities, and how disruptive they can be when they, for whatever reason, go off line.

Hours later, the second event was triggered when trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted for over three hours. The Exchange halted trading at 11:32 a.m. ET, leaving investors unable to buy and sell securities. The New York Stock Exchange said its floor trading resumed just after 3:10 p.m. Consequently, the Dow Jones Industrial Average took a “triple” digit hit and closed down 261 points.

Exchange officials blamed the shutdown on a "configuration issue" with their systems, according to a statement, and not a "cyber breach," according to a NYSE tweet. The configuration issue pertained to how the exchange's systems interact with one another, a source said.

At this point, suspicion crept into my mind. I mean, what are the odds that two major network systems could go down… hours apart?

Later that day, Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson assured the public that United's outage was not connected to a computer problem that disrupted trading at the New York Stock Exchange. The airline official also said "there was no hacking whatsoever" in the United outage. "I have spoken to the CEO of United myself," he said, "and it appears that the malfunctions from United and New York Stock Exchange were not the result of any nefarious actor."

Yeah, right… it seems that everyone from Homeland (in)Security to mainstream media outlets, such as CNN were all too quick to proclaim that this was not… repeat… NOT! HACKER RELATED. In the words of that famous bard, Will Shakespeare:  “Me thinks thou dost protest too much.”

Synchronicity is, by its very nature, a personal thing. For me, the third event… the synthesizing event… the event that tied these seemingly unrelated events together, into a triad of personal significance… of synchronistic meaning… came that evening, when I tuned in to an interesting, albeit quirky summer season television series, titled… Mr. Robot.

Mr. Robot is an American cyberpunk/thriller television series on USA Network, artfully created by Sam Esmail. The series follows one Elliot Alderson… a young cyber-security engineer living the dream in New York City. Elliot meets a mysterious social-anarchist known as "Mr. Robot" who recruits Elliot to join his team of hackers, known as: "F-society." The show follows Mr. Robot's attempts to engage Elliot in his mission to destroy the all-pervasive conglomerate… E (Evil) Corp… the very corporation Elliot is paid to protect. Conflicted by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs that are running (and ruining) the world.

Mr. Robot nails the portrayal of a particular breed of hacker who hacks to make sense of the modern world. The Elliot character is pretty tweeked… displaying Asperger-like symptoms such as avoiding eye contact, not liking to be touched… “Never show them my source code,” he says in voiceover. These peculiarities are simply interpersonal flaws… weaknesses of the meat. Hacking is his primary mode for controlling a world that he feels otherwise powerless to control. Hacking is the tool of choice for making connections in a world in which he feels alone… alienated…

Discerning readers of this blog can easily appreciate the ramifications of this third, coalescing “cosmic trigger.” It is in this TV show… this simple fiction… that the truths beneath the United Airlines and the NYSE stories are revealed.

We are living in the dystopian, cyberpunk world that we dismissed as science fiction just a couple of decades ago. We now experience daily, the alienation, confusion and surrealism we once only read about in the works of William Burroughs and William Gibson. The major themes of the cyberpunk genre, such as advanced information technologies and artificial intelligence, juxtaposed with a breakdown or radical change in the social order is the world we live in… is here now.

Our post-industrial dystopias are marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and upheaval. The modern “War on Terror” feels like a variation of the plot in the (somewhat cheesy) Arnold Schwarzenegger version of “Total Recall” …only the resistance isn’t on Mars… it’s right where you are sitting now. Gibson’s “Modern Panthers” those shadowy hackers from Neuromancer… have nothing on “Anonymous.”

Yowzah… the world in which we find ourselves is looking more and more like a surreal Philip K Dick yarn. As we continue to wake up to this reality, we… like those rascally Gnostics of old… feel the alienation setting in. The powers that be… like the Gnostic arch-villain, the Demiurge… seem to be increasingly cruel and unusual. Just as PKD realized and immortalized in the Quote: “The Empire Never Ended” …the ways of the world, persist. The power of the Roman empire that PDK saw in fevered dream… looks suspiciously like our modern Empire… marching into the desert.

The rapid deterioration of cultural constructs… the seemingly purposeful dismantling of society and its infrastructure… lead us to a critical breaking point. However... in times of crisis, there is opportunity. To return to the sayings of folklore…“it is always darkest just before the dawn.”

My preferred belief is that; it is the Empire that is at a breaking point… not humanity. The powers that be… the petro-chemical-arms dominators are just about done. They just don’t know it yet. It is true that the situation is desperate as usual. It is true that these are dangerous, confusing times. But here in the darkness, there resides a glimmer of light.

Again… more of us are waking up. More of are realizing that the Emperor wears no cloths. A single enlightened, compassionate soul is a powerful thing. Imagine what we can do together. Even as the Empire crumbles, the new mythologies… the new cultural foundations are beginning to appear. Be patient… for these things take time. We survived the harmonic convergence... we survived 2012... perhaps, in the words of the afore-mentioned folklorist... Third time's the Charm!

7/17 Update...

Cyberpunks= 1   NYSE= 0

Many articles, from many sources, have appeared across digital media since the double-whammy-woes of United Airlines & NYSE... claiming that the amorphous collective of socio-political, protest-as-theater, hacker-esque cyberpunks... known as "Anonymous" did indeed have everything to do with those (temporary) shutdowns.

The following example of such,  is from Techscruppt...

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, Anonymous wished bad luck to befall Wall Street.

When the New York Stock Exchange experienced “technical issues” slightly less than twelve hours later, Anonymous appeared to have received its wish.

Trading abruptly halted at 11:32am on Wednesday morning due to “some technical malfunctions,”explained NYSE director of floor operations, Art Cashin. While U.S. officials claimed there were no signs of a “cyber breach” that would have caused the difficulties, the timing of the Anonymous message is . . . interesting.
