The Passing of the Acid Queen
Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock) November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023
We lost the great Tina Turner in May of this year... and with her passing, the great earth mother welcomes home one of her most powerful avatars... one of the the most iconic, influential women of Rock, Blues, Soul... really any genre of modern popular music.
For a great peek into her amazing career, check out her Bio on Wikipedia
All of today's great female artists, and especially and more intimately... black female artists, from Beyoncé, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, to Lizzo and Cardi B... stand triumphantly on Tina Turner's broad, powerful, beautiful shoulders. Clearly there were great black female artists (Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, etc.) who came before Tina, but she was the first black woman to fully embrace her sexuality and express it... not merely as a sensual, fully realized black woman... but as a manifestation of the erotic form of Goddess.
The erotic form of the Hindi Goddess Kali... in all her wrathful glory... found a modern host in Tina's unashamedly sensual stage presence. Tina not only personified the power and freedom of the black female... she became the role model for thousands of young black women in the 70's and 80's. She held the space and gave permission for black women to fully embrace their sexuality and their power as modern women.
Unlike many other female goddess icons who could not hold the flame for long... Tina successfully transitioned through the three stages of goddess... Maiden, Madonna, and Crone. Tina aged gracefully, despite a battle with multiple, serious illnesses in her later life.
Throughout her life, Tina always maintained her genre was Rock n Roll. And as such, it was fitting that Tina took on the persona of Acid Queen in The Who's 1975 release of their rock opera... Tommy. And as a modern manifestation of Mamacita... Mother Ayahuasca, within the Western Psychedelic tradition of the 60's, 70's and beyond... Tina became the Goddess of psychedelia.
Find below an excellent example of Tina's Compassionate Goddess form... and a beautiful example of her grace and wisdom she so magnificently demonstrated in her aging...
